Cochlear Implants

Central West Audiology performs private cochlear implantation assessments and education

Central West Audiology works in conjunction with Dr Aydin Mohammadi (ENT) for cochlear implantation. All candidates should obtain a referral to both

Dr Mohammadi and Central West Audiology if you are pursing cochlear implantation investigation.

The process can vary from patient to patient, and your individual plan will be discussed with you at your initial appointment. The below stages discuss the typical pattern of appointments required.

COCHLEAR IMPLANT PROCESS

Your candidacy for a cochlear implant needs to be established through medical and audiological assessments.

Audiological testing involves evaluation of your hearing, speech abilities, existing hearing aid/s and quality of life indicators.

Medical suitability is determined via scans, usually MRI/CT and surgical suitability. A full requirement will be provided by your ENT surgeon.

This can take several appointments over weeks to ensure you are a suitable candidate.

ONGOING REQUIREMENTS

If deemed a suitable candidate, you will go on to have your surgery scheduled.

Following surgery, you will be required for at least 6 months to attend the clinic for follow up appointments. This will include your initial ‘switch-on’ activation, adjustment appointments as well as ongoing maintenance appointments.

You will also be required to have check-ups with your surgeon.

Cochlear implants take time to adjust to, and we anticipate a 6-month period at a minimum for you to reach your maximum hearing ability. Auditory training is part of this program and it is essential candidates are aware of their commitment and the expected outcomes we hope to achieve.
